In China, culinary diversity reigns supreme. You’ll never experience culinary déjà vu. Each region boasts its unique dishes, offering a unity of distinct flavors and cuisine. Furthermore, freshness is a constant theme, with Chinese food consistently served in its prime.

Do You Know These Facts about China?

From its ancient old civilization to its breathtaking sites, unique culture, and traditions, you will learn these few facts about China here.

Do you know if you put all of China’s railway lines, it can loop around the earth two times?

Do you know that all Pandas in the world are owned by China, except two. The unique pair, Xin Xin and Shuan Shuan, reside in the Chapultepec Zoo in Mexico City, Mexico.

Did you know China currently holds the second position in the global rankings for the number of World Heritage Sites?

It has accumulated a total of 57 World Heritage Sites. This comprises 38 cultural heritage sites, 14 natural heritage sites, and 4 mixed sites.

Zhangjiajie National Forest Park.

Did you know that in the Wulingyuan area of Zhangjiajie, China, the Bailong Elevator can ascend to an impressive height of 300 meters along the edge of a cliff?

Notably, it holds the distinction of being the world’s most massive and loftiest outdoor elevator.

One of the most breathtaking landscapes in China is the Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, known for its stunning sandstone pillars, lush greenery, and unique rock formations. The park, located in the Hunan Province, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and served as inspiration for the floating mountains in the movie “Avatar.”

Imagine you’re in the Bailong, a glass elevator built into the side of a cliff. You have access to the panoramic views of the surrounding landscape of Zhangjiajie.

Imagine towering quartzite sandstone columns, some rising hundreds of meters into the sky, covered in dense vegetation. These pillars are often shrouded in mist, creating a surreal and magical atmosphere. The Yuanjiajie Scenic Area, within the park, offers the famous “Avatar Hallelujah Mountain,” a pillar that inspired the floating mountains in the film.

The Dragon Boat Festival (Duanwu)

The Dragon Boat Festival (Duanwu)

The Chinese Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanwu Festival, is a traditional holiday celebrated in China and other East Asian countries. Here are some key aspects of the festival:

Date: The Dragon Boat Festival is observed on the 5th day of the 5th month of the Chinese lunar calendar, which usually falls in June on the Gregorian calendar.

Origin: The festival has a rich history, with its roots in commemorating the ancient poet and statesman Qu Yuan. Legend has it that Qu Yuan drowned himself in the Miluo River as a form of protest against political corruption. People raced dragon boats to rescue him or retrieve his body, leading to the tradition of dragon boat races during the festival.

Dragon Boat Races: The most iconic aspect of the festival is the dragon boat races, where teams paddle in long, narrow boats decorated like dragons. These races symbolize the attempt to rescue Qu Yuan or retrieve his body from the river.

Warding Off Evil Spirits: Besides dragon boat races and eating zongzi, people also participate in other customs during the Dragon Boat Festival, such as hanging up pouches of herbs believed to repel evil spirits and wearing colorful silk threads to protect against diseases.

The Dragon Boat Festival is not only a time for cultural festivities but also an occasion for family gatherings, paying respects to ancestors, and ensuring well-being by observing various traditions associated with the festival.

Zongzi – The flavor of Tradition.

Zongzi is a traditional Chinese food often associated with the Dragon Boat Festival (Duanwu Festival). These are pyramid-shaped or cylindrical sticky rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves. The leaves impart a unique fragrance to the rice during the cooking process.

Inside the bamboo leaf casing, the sticky rice is typically filled with a variety of ingredients, including meats (such as chicken), beans, nuts, and sometimes salted duck egg yolk. The choice of ingredients can vary based on regional preferences.

Zongzi is made by tightly wrapping the ingredients in bamboo leaves and then cooking them by steaming or boiling. The result is a delicious and flavorful dumpling with a sticky, glutinous texture.

Eating Zongzi during the Dragon Boat Festival is a tradition that has evolved from the legend of Qu Yuan. People would throw these rice dumplings into the river to prevent fish from eating Qu Yuan’s body. Today, Zongzi has become a symbol of the festival and is enjoyed as a festive delicacy by many during this time of the year.
